The Bale Eco-Region has historically faced high rates of maternal and infant mortality, as well as food insecurity and malnutrition. Because of increasing industrial waste disposal, lack of adequate sanitation services, and expanding areas for agriculture and livestock, they now also experience environmental stresses like air pollution, water pollution, and deforestation. Each of these challenges can worsen the cycle of poverty and poor health outcomes.

Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project
This mixed-method study sought to explore the effect of FP Voices on workshop attendees, interviewees, interviewers, and story readers’ knowledge, attitudes, practice, and ability to share information with their social networks (i.e., to diffuse information) related to family planning. Final results show that it has not only improved knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy among its audience; it has also fostered collaboration.

Communities are using an approach known as Population, Health, and Environment (PHE) to improve primary health care services, particularly family planning and reproductive health, while also helping conserve biodiversity, manage natural resources, and develop sustainable livelihoods. PHE programs recognize that when these issues are addressed together, communities thrive.
